Chapter Seven: Shadows

Lunch with Forrest was amazing. Miss Maggie whipped us up a pair of tasty, steak sandwiches. The meat was juicy, combined with a smooth, provolone cheese, and a mix of fried onions, peppers, and mushrooms. And the sauce. It was zesty, coming alive in my mouth

I sat next to Forrest behind his desk, our chairs pulled up tight. We were both famished after our romp on the desk. My rear was a little sore. But it was a good sore. The pleasure still buzzed through my body.

Forrest at with a wolfish hunger, taking huge bites out of his sandwich, juices dripping down his chin. I couldn't resist. I leaned up, my tongue licking up the savory steak, our lips meeting in a spicy kiss. It was intoxicating around Forrest. He made my heart scream for joy. When we finished eating, his arm went around my shoulders, my head leaning back as I kicked up my booted feet on his desk.

“I could stay like this all day,” I sighed, staring up at the panels of the drop ceiling, my eyes roaming the indentations. One panel looked like a howling wolf.

Forrest let out an agreeable growl, his head lolling back, his eyes closed.

“But...” I didn't want to leave, but I was on my lunch break. “I probably should get back to the roadhouse.”

“Probably,” Forrest agreed. “Just like I probably should get back to protecting this town.”

“Yeah...” My eyes closed. “We can probably spend a few more minutes.”

“Uh-huh.”

The tendrils of sleep were caressing my mind, drawing me down into black oblivion. But the guilt rose. Miss Maggie gave me this job. I shouldn't shirk just because I wanted to spend time with my hunky boyfriend.

We would have tonight for that.

“Okay, Sheriff,” I groaned, putting my feet down and sitting up. “It's time for us to stop being lazy.”

“Right, right,” he groaned, standing up and holding out to his hand.

I took it, his strength pulling me to my feet. We walked around his desk and opened the door to his office. Veronica and Hank were lounging against a desk. Veronica clapped wildly while Hank threw back his head and let out a series of wolfish howls.

My cheeks went crimson. “You...heard us?” I mumbled.

“Loud and clear, darling,” Hank laughed. “I think the entire town must have heard you.”

Veronica's green eyes twinkled. “That was quite the performance. You had poor Hank humping the air.”

“Well, I tried to hump Veronica, but she tried to take a chunk out of my neck.”

Veronica bared her teeth in a smiling grin at Hank. “I promise not to bite too hard.”

Hank roared in laughter. “No thanks. I still have the teeth marks on my ass from the last woman that said that.”

Forrest pulled me too him. “Have a good evening. I'll pick you up from the roadhouse.”

I nodded, his strong arms sliding around me. “Be safe.”

His grin was wolfish and unconcerned, and then he kissed me.

I didn't care that Veronica put two fingers between her lips and let out shrill whistles as Hank howled in delight.
